Using a stochastic cellular automaton model for urban traffic flow we study and compare macroscopic fundamental diagrams mfds of arterial road networks governed by different types of adaptive traffic signal systems under various boundary conditions.

In this section we present the automated network fundamental diagram anfd as an analytical tool for modeling the dynamics of traffic in networks with smart intersections. The 3d mfd links the number of cars and buses in an urban network to the total travel production. A macroscopic traffic model involving traffic flux traffic density and velocity forms the basis of the fundamental diagram. Such characteristics of an mfd provide a new theoretical basis to assess the traffic network performance and further appraise the quality of network design strategies.
